Milk

Inside a pouch in my heart
I carry a thing
Do you remember the night?

The first star, awake
above our heads
Reaching up to touch

collecting dust in our hands
Do you remember,
when you peeled apart my skin?

Leaving blue, open air
turning my heart to red
filling the sack, made of skin

Inside the pouch, you left a thing
a cluster of dust, star light, a voice in the rain
a memory made in milk

Where the moon is melting
the sun will carry on
and sing

  1. I love the balance in your writing Archna..poignant..but not pitying..beautiful but not overly sweet..though sweet enough..the questions are wonderfully placed in this piece too..I am sure that night is remembered..not just by you..Jae

  2. I enjoyed reading this aloud. Love where you take this with your body being a fortress. Someone always gets through though.

    1. You would hope that the heart would stand as a pillar. Thank you for reading so carefully, Judy.

  3. Archna.. this was so beautiful, although, I am not very good at deciphering poetry but I felt as if these were lyrics to a song I would enjoy hearing. I am awed by such creative poetry! thanks for sharing this.

    1. And it certainly is okay to find words and simply feel them. Thanks so much for coming by and sharing your thoughts. :)

    1. Hi Totomai, thank you for holding on to some of my words. Yes, it is sad. Sometimes the fort is forced to consider more than our hearts can hold.

  6. This is a stunning work, pure beauty, coming as it did from the magical place you went to retrieve it : )

  9. Interesting analogy of your body being like a fortress. Sometimes we make it hard for people to get through. Lovely poem, as usual!

    1. I think we usually hear it referred to as a vessel, but 'fort' is reasonable too, since it shelters an absolute form of light. Thanks Sherry!

  10. I love the connection between these sections: "Inside a pouch in my heart I carry a thing" and "Inside the pouch, you left a thing"

    This is my favorite part:
"a cluster of dust, star light, a voice in the rain
    a memory made in milk
    Where the moon is melting
    the sun will carry on"
